Skoda Enyaq: electric SUV name revealed

  • Skoda's first all electric SUV name revealed
  • Enyaq comes from the Irish name Enya
  • Builds on existing Skoda SUV naming structure

Skoda¡¯s first fully electric SUV will be called Enyaq when it goes on sale later in 2020. The new badge is derived from the Irish name Enya, which means source of life, and has something to do with the Czech manufacturer¡¯s debut into the EV world. Providing you ignore the Citigo-e iV, of course.

Structurally it builds on the established naming convention used in Skoda SUVs, which all start with the letter K and end with the letter Q (Kodiaq, Karoq and Kamiq) except because this is an electric car, it starts with an E.

We won¡¯t see what it looks like until later in 2020 but it¡¯s set to take design cues from the Vision iV Concept, a futuristic-looking coupe-like SUV with a chopped roof and full width light bar.

However it ends up looking, it¡¯ll share its underpinnings with other electric cars across the VW Group, thanks to a versatile platform known as the Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB). This is the technology underneath the VW ID.3 hatchback and ID.4 SUV, too, and it's very thoroughly developed despite being new to market..

This is one small part of a huge drive towards electrification for the brands under the VW umbrella, which also includes Audi, SEAT and Porsche.

Skoda alone says it will produce ten more ¡®iV¡¯ electric models by the end of 2022, with 25% of sales made up of EVs and PHEVs by 2025.

What this means for you

There's never been a better time to start looking at whether an electric car is right for you. Gone are the days when you had a half dozen choices of small hatchback EV - you can now consider a whole host of different sizes and shapes available now, or in the very near future.
